23 in ’13: To Glory

Here’s my third 23 in ’13 Challenge piece inspired by John Anealio’s instrumental song “7 Rounds” (available for free download on his site).

It took me longer to finish this piece than the previous two for various boring reasons which I will spare you. I was debating making the background all vector art, but once I started playing with the plain inked version, the imperfections grew on me.

I spent a lot of time playing around with the colors for this piece. I’m still not sure I’m 100% happy with the results, but I do see improvements in my coloring techniques… so huzzah, I guess.

23 in ’13

Wrong Turn Over the weekend, singer-songwriter extraordinaire, John Anealioannounced a bold self-challenge wherein he is planning on creating 23 new songs this year. As writing and composing a song is on my things-I-want-to-do-in-this-lifetime list, seeing someone do one, let alone 23 in a year, is inspiring to say the least. I wish him luck in this endeavor.

Because some evil part of me likes a good challenge, I’ve decided to jump on the spacewagon and join his effort. While writing 23 songs is well out of my current skill set, I thought drawing 23 somethings should be doable. I mean, I managed to create 31 monsters last October and then another 30 characters in November – granted they were very small pieces of art. 23 illustrations shouldn’t be an unobtainable goal, right? Right.

As my 23 in ’13 challenge I am going to do 23 illustrations that will be on a larger scale than my previous art card/sketch projects. Not only that, but they will be illustrative responses to the 23 songs John is going to produce. Yeah, yeah, I know, that’s so meta. ;) Seeing as he is planning on doing a lot of instrumental works, this should be very interesting. I’m looking forward to the challenge.

Likewise, I challenge you to take up the 23 in ’13 challenge too. What 23 somethings will you do this year?
