I've heard of people changing images on their servers to combat hotlinking, and that may be what you'd run into. As a general rule, unless I'm linking to the cover of a book (such as on Amazon) I prefer to upload a copy of the image to my own server. That way I can be sure the image will be there for future use and I'm not hotlinking to someone who may not appreciate me nibbling away at their allotted bandwidth.
